This blog has been quiet for a while. Okay, for rather a long time. It is time to get it going again. This time with the help of Docker. The aim is to make the local environment I use to write and maintain the blog more portable.
I’m a Statistical Bioinformatician currently working as a Postdoc in the Immunogenomics Lab at the Garvan in Sydney. My main interests are in rare genetic variation, Functional Genomics and the analysis of complex datasets in general. Here I write about topics relating to bioinformatics, reproducible research and other otpics of interest to me.

Recently I gave an introductory workshop to eQTL analysis1. I decided to use docker to provide a uniform working environment for everyone. This was my first serious use of docker and a somewhat mixed experience.
This is the second post an a short series describing my experience with setting up Octopress for this blog. The first post, dealing with installation and basic customisation, can be found here.
I now use markdown for most of my writing. Whether it is a post for this blog, a technical report or a presentation for work, if there isn’t a good reason not to, I use markdown to write it. As it happens, I also spend a fair amount of time commuting by train and bus. Sitting on public transport seems like a great time to get some writing done.
Recently I decided that it was time for me to start my own blog. When thinking about the details I quickly realised that I wanted something that integrated well with my existing workflow. The process of writing, publishing and managing posts needed to be as unobtrusive as possible, otherwise I’d struggle to find the time.
Welcome to my new blog. Here I will talk about all things Bioinformatics (and maybe some other things too). Currently I work alot with R, Markdown and GitHub, so chances are you’ll hear a bit about those soon.
